Many years ago, I was given an old box by my grandmother. It contained several old coins and banknotes.
Apparently, my great-grandfather used to set aside any foreign currency that came into his hands, and he then passed this collection to his daughter, who eventually passed it to me.
It seemed like a waste to leave the coins and bills like that, simply tossed together in the same case, so I tried my best to identify and organize them one by one.
Most coins weren't exactly in the best of shapes... but it was tons of fun to try to figure out which country and year they belonged to.
And among the banknotes, I found several Italian Lira bills. The Lira was the currency that Italy used until 2002, before switching to the Euro!
I used to pay with them all the time when I was a teenager. From what I remember, a Coke cost something like 2,000 Lire, while your average lunch took something like 7,000 to 10,000 Lire...
Yeah, the numbers on the bills were pretty high, mostly because of the inflation that hit Italy post WWII.
And while the collection had every Italian Lira banknote, I simply couldn't find the largest one... the 500,000 Lire bill.
After thinking for a while what might have happened to it, I finally remembered.
Grandma passed the collection to me as Italy was about to switch its currency to the Euro, so she took this chance to add all Italian Lira banknotes to it. To preserve them.
But given that they were still legal tender (for a short while), I promptly took the 500,000 Lire bill out of the box, and used it to buy myself a brand new videogame.
I think it was FromSoftware's Evergrace, for the PS2? I didn't even finish it. I'm sorry, grandma...
